Avenue Road – Deck & Pergola Rebuild

When we were referred to Emma by a friend, we discovered a story that, sadly, we’ve heard too often. Emma and her family had hired an out-of-town building crew who seemed professional and offered a sharp price. But what should have been a beautiful new outdoor area turned into a major disappointment.

The deck had been built below standard and left incomplete. The pergola was poorly constructed — the framing was level, yet the builders installed clearlite roofing with no fall, causing leaks from day one. The structure itself was unstable and unsafe. It left a sour taste for Emma’s family and robbed them of the outdoor space they’d envisioned.

Our Plan
My heart went out to them. We sat down together and came up with a plan to fix what had been done — salvaging what we could, keeping costs down, and restoring their trust in the process.

We removed the failed pergola, pulled up decking boards that had been laid without proper gaps, and cut the deck back to meet boundary requirements. We then built a new fence line with a matching gate, rebuilt the pergola, relaid the roofing with correct fall and drainage, and reinstalled the decking boards.

The Technical Challenge
The rebuild demanded precision. Each post had to be perfectly spaced to fit pre-made oriental trellis panels. The deck needed to align neatly with the fence line, while the pergola posts extended high enough to carry the new structure. Because the pergola fell toward the house, we integrated a discreet internal gutter system. Re-using the existing decking — riddled with screw holes and uneven joist spacing — required patience and skill, but the result was seamless.

The Result
What began as a disappointing experience for Emma’s family turned into a rewarding transformation. Their outdoor area is now solid, watertight, and beautifully finished — a perfect setting for the hospitality and warmth they love to share.

For us, it was more than just a rebuild. It was about restoring confidence — proving that craftsmanship and care still matter. Too many homeowners are burned by poor workmanship, and it shouldn’t be that way. Our goal is to set a higher standard for what local builders can deliver: honesty, quality, and pride in every job.
